Where France and Germany Meet 5: October 2012 Road Scholar

5. Viticulture in the Moselle Valley

On October 07, we continued our cruise north-west up the Moselle Valley from Cochem to Bernkastel and beyond. I think I was able to take some of my most captivating photos as we quietly cruised past a multitude of vineyards and several beautiful villages. We ate a delicious lunch on-board the St. Odile. We also listened to Peter's discussion about the Roman Empire and the area we were passing through.

In the afternoon, we wandered through the town of Bernkastel, under the leadership of our engaging young guide Sebastian. He took us to a local winery where we savoured the taste of local Reislings, and learned about the techniques and the lives of local vintners.

The misty morning weather enabled us to see the nearest vineyards.

Gentle waves rolled off the St. Odile onto the nearby river bank.

The slope of the bank enables the grapes to capture a maximum of sunlight.

Village life along the river seemed to be idyllic.

The view from the deck was lovely.

I spent time trying to improve my ability to capture fog and low-lying clouds.

The town bicycle riders gave us a race.

Jack and Lou debated the most difficult on-board choice: beer or wine for lunch?

Elaine chose beer!

Happy people

Here's why they're happy!

I chose the alternate.

Jack smiled for a portrait.

We saw interesting sights in Bernkastel.

Susan is usually reluctant to pose for photos - but she liked the puppy in the armour.

Gerry actually enjoyed being chained by a medieval court!

Three views from the bridge...

Our visit to the winery took us under the arbour,  through the tasting room, and into the cellar.

Sebastian wouldn't tell us what happened inside the vineyard hut.
