Where France and Germany Meet 1: October 2012 Road Scholar

Road Scholar October 2012: Where France and Germany Meet

1. Strasbourg

This post celebrates the arrival of our group of 16 Americans and Canadians in the fascinating city of Strasbourg, France. Our leader Karin and our historian Peter revealed the complex history of the city which has changed back and forth from independence to Germany to France many times. We learned of the rich heritage, both French and German, of Alsace-Lorraine. We also learned about the vigorous attempts that have been made since World War II to promote European unity and to end 1200 years of European political and religious wars.

Our hotel was comfortable and well located.
The Bishop's Palace was stunning.
The grandeur was impressive.
The wealth was displayed in style.

Of course, our group listened attentively.

The art collection was fascinating.

The archaeological museum in the Bishop's Palace traced the history back from Roman to Paeleolithic times.

I enjoyed the unique creatures at the Gothic Cathedral in the centre of town.

The Merovingian Kings from the Early Middle Ages were portrayed in stained glass at the cathedral.
The church door hinge was impressive.

Our first lunch set the tone for fine eating throughout the trip.

Lou and Frank eagerly await dessert.

Elaine is happy with dessert.
The streets of Strasbourg are lined with beautiful 16th to 19th century buildings.

Our guide, Yves, illustrated the details of architecture from medieval to present.

The scenes by the canal and river in Strasbourg were beautiful.

Our group learned to appreciate the successes of the European Parliament in attempting to create a unified Europe and to prevent future wars.
